Why doesn't my site show up in search and how to find it?

Short answer

Your site doesn't show up for three main reasons: it's not in the index (search engine can't see pages), it's in the index but ranked below 50 (effectively invisible), or you're searching for queries the site isn't optimized for. Check: type site:yoursite.com in Google — if 0 pages shown, you're not indexed. If pages exist but don't rank for needed queries — the issue is keyword targeting or competition.

Your site doesn't show up for one of three reasons: it's not in the index, it's indexed but ranked below 50, or you're searching for the wrong queries. First step: open Google and type site:yoursite.com. If 0 results — you're not indexed, and any "promotion" is useless until you fix the technical issue.

Step 1: Check indexation

  • site: operator: site:yoursite.com in Google. 0 pages = critical, pages = index works.
  • Google Search Console: "Pages" section. See indexed vs excluded.

If 0 pages — typical causes

  1. robots.txt blocks crawling. Open yoursite.com/robots.txt — if Disallow: / for all User-agents, you've blocked everyone.
  2. noindex meta tag. Common after migrating from staging.
  3. Young domain. Under 2 weeks — bots haven't crawled yet. Force submit URLs in GSC.
  4. 5xx, 404 errors. Server doesn't return pages.
  5. JS framework without SSR. Bot sees empty HTML.
