Why did my website traffic drop after a Google update?

Short answer

Google and other search engines release 4-6 major algorithm updates yearly that can sharply change rankings. If your drop coincides with a known update, the cause is content quality, E-E-A-T, or backlink profile. If it dropped 'out of nowhere' — it's usually a technical failure: indexation issues, slow loading, or a low-quality content penalty.

Step 1 — match the drop date with known Google updates

Open Google Search Console → "Performance". Set period to "90 days". If the drop matches the date of a known update (lists are maintained by Search Engine Land, Semrush Sensor) — it's an algorithm change, not your mistake.

5 most common reasons for traffic drops

  • Helpful Content Update. Google demotes sites with "unhelpful" or AI-generated content lacking expert editing. 100+ articles written by AI without editorial review = this.
  • Core Update. The algorithm reassesses domain trust. Drop affects all pages evenly. Recovery takes 3-6 months minimum.
  • Spam Update. If you've been actively buying links in the last 3-6 months — this is a penalty for manipulation.
  • Technical failure. Check robots.txt, GSC indexation, server response time. Sometimes a CMS update blocks bots.
  • Competitors improved. If your top 10 is now occupied by newer sites with deeper articles — you've been outranked on quality, not "Google dropped you."

What to do in the first 7 days

  1. Take screenshots of falling pages in GSC + Analytics (for the report).
  2. Run the site through PageSpeed Insights and Screaming Frog — log technical issues.
  3. Identify the top 10 pages with biggest drops — compare them with top 10 competitors.
  4. Check the backlink profile via Ahrefs / GSC — no sudden spam-link spike?
  5. DON'T panic and make chaotic edits — it'll make things worse.

How long recovery takes

After a Core Update — 3-6 months minimum with proper work. After a Spam Update — 6-12 months. After technical failure — anywhere from 1 week to 2 months. Golden rule: don't make sudden moves in the first 2-4 weeks — let the algorithm settle, otherwise you can make it worse.
