Backlink

External link from another site to yours. Primary domain authority signal in search algorithms.

Full definition

Backlink is a hyperlink to your site from an external domain. The main domain authority signal in Google, Bing, and AI system algorithms.

How backlinks work

Google uses links as "trust votes": the more authoritative sites link to you, the higher your authority → higher rankings. This is the base principle of PageRank (Larry Page, 1998).

Quality > quantity

1 link from NYTimes.com is 1000× more valuable than 1000 links from directory marketplaces. Link quality is determined by:

  • •Source domain authority (DR/DA)
  • •Topical relevance — niche-specific links matter more than general
  • •Anchor text — contains keyword (but don't overdo)
  • •Link position — in the text body stronger than in footer
  • •Surrounding content — relevant to the topic
  • •rel attribute — dofollow passes equity, nofollow doesn't (but nofollow is still useful)

Top sources of quality backlinks

1. Digital PR — mentions in TechCrunch, Forbes, BusinessInsider 2. Guest posts on niche blogs 3. Research and surveys — other sites link as the source 4. Broken-link building — find broken link to competitor → offer yours 5. HARO/Connectively — journalists seek experts, you provide commentary 6. Directories and listings — large ones (G2, Capterra, ProductHunt)

Black-hat methods and why they don't work

  • •Link marketplaces — Google detects, Penguin filter
  • •PBN (Private Blog Networks) — controlled site network; discovered by algorithms, all banned
  • •Comment spam — useless for years
  • •Link farms — instant filter

Where to see your backlinks

  • •GSC → Links → External Links (Google index only, partial)
  • •Ahrefs Site Explorer — most complete, $99+/mo
  • •Semrush Backlink Analytics — pro
  • •Moz Link Explorer — pro, has free tier

Realistic expectations

For a new site in an average niche: - Month 1-3: 10-30 links (organic growth) - Month 4-12: 50-200 links (active outreach) - Year 2+: 500-2000 links

In competitive niches (finance, legal) — need 5-10× more.
