Domain Authority (DR/DA)

Domain strength metric by Ahrefs (DR) or Moz (DA). 0 to 100. Higher = stronger site.

Full definition

Domain Authority (DA) and Domain Rating (DR) are third-party "site strength" metrics. DA — from Moz, DR — from Ahrefs. Scale 0-100, logarithmic.

Difference between DA and DR

| Metric | Calculated by | What it measures | |---|---|---| | DA (Domain Authority) | Moz | Predicted ranking ability | | DR (Domain Rating) | Ahrefs | Backlink profile strength relative to other domains | | TF/CF (Trust Flow/Citation Flow) | Majestic | Link quality and quantity | | AS (Authority Score) | Semrush | Composite metric |

Important: these are NOT Google metrics

Google officially doesn't use DA/DR. It has internal PageRank, but it's not public since 2016. DA/DR are third-party estimates based on their own link indexes.

But! DA/DR correlate well with real ranking ability. Useful proxy for: - Comparison with competitors - Evaluating strength of potential link donors - Tracking site authority growth

Benchmark values

| DR/DA | Level | |---|---| | 0-20 | New site | | 21-40 | Developing | | 41-60 | Average business site | | 61-80 | Strong niche player | | 81-100 | Top domains (Wikipedia, NYTimes, BBC) |

How DR/DA grows

Main factor — backlinks from authoritative domains. Content, technical SEO don't directly affect, only indirectly (via attracting links).

Realistic growth timelines

  • •New site in 6-12 months: DR 0 → 20-30
  • •From 30 to 50: another 12-18 months of active work
  • •From 50 to 70: 2-3+ years

Main mistake

Obsessing over DR number. DR is useful for tracking but not the goal. You can have DR 70 and zero traffic (if content doesn't match queries). Goal — traffic and conversions, DR is just one indicator on the path.
