Toxic backlinks
Spam links from low-quality sites. Can trigger penalties. Disavowed via Disavow tool.
Full definition
Toxic backlinks are inbound links from low-quality, spammy, or suspicious sites that harm SEO. Main risk: manual Google penalties or Penguin algorithmic filter.
Signs of a toxic link
- •Source — spam domain (irrelevant content, cheap design, no real audience)
- •Source — PBN (Private Blog Network) — controlled site network
- •Anchor — exact keyword on spam domain
- •Context — article "about everything" without logic
- •Donor's topic completely unrelated to yours
- •High concentration of outgoing links (40+ links per article)
- •Domain in blacklists (Mozscape, Webrankinfo)
Where they come from
1. Link marketplaces — if purchased 2. PBN networks — if used in the past 3. Spam competitors — negative SEO attacks 4. Automated tools — GSA, Money Robot, and similar 5. Random accumulation — any site collects garbage over years
How to detect
1. Ahrefs → Site Explorer → Backlink profile → Spam Score filter (low quality) 2. Semrush Backlink Audit → auto toxicity scoring 3. GSC → Links → External — top domains, look for suspicious 4. Manual check — open donor domain, evaluate
What to do with toxic links
Step 1: Outreach (try to remove) Find domain owner contact → ask to remove the link. Works in ~10-20% of cases.
Step 2: Google Disavow Tool If removal failed, send list of bad domains to Google Disavow. Google will stop counting these links.
# disavow.txt format
domain:spam-site.com

domain:bad-domain.netUpload: search.google.com/search-console/disavow-links
When you need Disavow
- •Got a manual action in GSC for "unnatural links"
- •Sharp traffic drop after Penguin update
- •Active negative SEO attack
When NOT to use Disavow
- •Preventively (without clear problem) — Google ignores most garbage itself
- •For a few spam links — not critical
- •Without understanding what you're doing — can accidentally "disavow" good links
Realistic 2026 policy
Most SEO agencies don't use Disavow without clear cause. Google learned to ignore spam itself. Disavow — last resort for manual penalties or obvious attacks.
