Organic Traffic
Visitors who came from organic search results. The primary metric of SEO effectiveness.
Full definition
Organic traffic is visitors who came to the site from free (unpaid) results in search engines (Google, Bing, Yandex, DuckDuckGo). The main metric of SEO effectiveness.
Not to be confused with
- •Direct traffic — typed URL manually or from bookmarks
- •Paid traffic — came via Google Ads, Microsoft Advertising (Bing Ads), Yandex Direct
- •Referral — clicked from another site
- •Social — from social networks
Where organic comes from
| Source | Market share (2026) | Notes | |---|---|---| | Google | ~88% global | Main channel, default optimization target | | Bing | ~7% global, ~30% in B2B/corporate | Powers ChatGPT Search, Copilot, DuckDuckGo | | Yandex | dominant in Russia/CIS | Strong behavioral factors | | DuckDuckGo | ~2% global | Uses Bing index | | Yahoo | ~1% | Also Bing index |
Why Bing matters in 2026
- •Bing index is the source for ChatGPT Search and Microsoft Copilot. Not in Bing index = not cited by ChatGPT Search
- •DuckDuckGo and Yahoo also use the Bing index
- •B2B audience (corporate Windows machines with Edge by default) — major Bing traffic share
- •Competition in Bing is dramatically lower than Google — easier to break through
- •Bing Webmaster Tools has free features GSC lacks (SERP heatmaps, deeper robots.txt insights)
Where to see
- •GA4 → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition → "Organic Search" channel (all engines)
- •Google Search Console → Performance → clicks (Google only)
- •Bing Webmaster Tools → Search Performance (Bing + Yahoo + DuckDuckGo + ChatGPT Search)
- •Microsoft Clarity — Microsoft's free behavioral analytics (Hotjar alternative)
Organic traffic quality
The same traffic volume can produce different revenue. Quality is measured via: - Conversion to lead/purchase - Average order value - Returning visitors - Time on site
Traffic from informational queries converts 5-10x worse than transactional. 1,000 visitors from "what is SEO" ≠ 1,000 from "order SEO audit".
How to grow organic traffic
1. Content — covering more queries. Each article = additional traffic. 2. Technical SEO — improving rankings of existing pages. 3. Backlink profile — rising domain authority → all positions rise. 4. CTR optimization — more clicks from the same impressions without rank changes. 5. AI/GEO — appearing in AI Overview, Perplexity, ChatGPT gives a new channel.
Realistic expectations
For a new site in a moderately competitive niche: - Month 1-2: ~50-200 organic/month - Month 3-4: 500-2,000/mo - Month 6-9: 5,000-15,000/mo - Month 12+: 20,000-100,000+/mo
In competitive niches (legal services in major cities, finance, medicine) — divide by 2-3.
