AI Overview
Google's generated answer at the top of SERP — replaces 10 blue links for informational queries.
Full definition
AI Overview (formerly Search Generative Experience, SGE) is a generative answer block that Google shows at the top of search results for a large portion of informational queries. Officially launched in May 2024 in the US, rolled out to 100+ countries in 2025.
As of June 2026, AI Overview appears for roughly 30% of US searches and 15% globally. It cites 3-5 sources — getting into that list is the main goal of GEO optimization.
How AI Overview picks sources
Per Authoritas research (May 2026), 87% of AI Overview citations come from top-5 organic results, and 99% from top-10. Without classical SEO, you can't enter AI Overview.

What matters in 2026
Organic CTR drops 15-30% when AI Overview is shown. AI Overview = less traffic to sites. The only way to offset this is to be included as a source.
