Title tag

Page <title> tag — key text in search snippet. Optimal length 50-60 characters.

Full definition

Title (meta title) is the HTML `<title>` tag in `<head>`. The strongest on-page ranking factor. Displays in SERP as the clickable headline and in the browser tab.

Optimal parameters

  • •Length: 50-60 characters (with spaces). Longer — Google truncates in SERP.
  • •Main keyword — in the first third
  • •Uniqueness — every page on the site has its own Title
  • •Contains brand — usually at the end via separator: "Title | Brand"

Example of a good Title

<title>Free SEO Audit in 1–2 Days | Adaptive Lab</title>

Here: - Main keyword "SEO Audit" up front - "24 Hours" — boosts CTR - "Free" — adds attractiveness - Brand at the end

Top mistakes

1. Same Title across all pages — Google ranks only one 2. Duplicating H1 in Title — missed opportunity for variety 3. Keyword stuffing — "SEO London buy order cheap" — spam, demotion 4. Too long — gets truncated, meaning lost 5. No brand — missed branding opportunity

2026 specifics

Google increasingly rewrites Titles in SERP (~60% of cases). The algorithm pulls from H1 and content. To keep your Title: make it relevant to the query and not spammy.

How to measure

GSC → Performance → page filter → check CTR. If CTR is below average for the position — Title is weak, test variants.
