Keyword rankings

Site's position in SERP for a specific query. Tracked via GSC, Topvisor, Ahrefs.

Full definition

Keyword rankings (positions) is the site's place in search results for a specific query. The base metric of SEO effectiveness.

What "top-1", "top-10" means

When people say "top-10" — they mean the first 10 organic results on Google's or Bing's SERP (usually the first page). "Top-3" — three first results. "Top-100" — first hundred.

Important: AI Overview, ad blocks, maps, images — don't count as organic positions.

CTR distribution by position (2026)

| Position | CTR | |---|---| | 1 | 27% | | 2-3 | 15% and 11% | | 4-10 | 8% → 2% | | 11-20 (page 2) | <1% | | 21-100 | ~0% |

Conclusion: positions 11+ basically give no traffic. SEO goal — top-10, ideally top-5.

Where to see positions

  • •GSC → Performance → "Average position" column (Google only)
  • •Bing Webmaster Tools → Search Performance
  • •Rank tracking tools:
  • • - Ahrefs Rank Tracker — pro, $30+/mo
  • • - Semrush Position Tracking — pro
  • • - AccuRanker — pro

Why GSC shows "average position"

GSC aggregates data. If a query was shown 100 times: 50 times at position 3, 50 times at position 7 → average 5. This is a simplification.

What affects positions

In order of importance: 1. Content relevance to the query 2. Domain authority (backlink profile) 3. Behavioral factors 4. Technical factors (CWV, indexation) 5. E-E-A-T for YMYL niches 6. Local signals for geo queries

Realistic timelines to reach top-10

  • •Long-tail queries (<100 searches/mo): 2-4 months
  • •Mid-tail: 4-8 months
  • •High-volume competitive: 9-18 months

Main mistake

Chasing rankings for "proud" high-volume queries while ignoring the long tail. 1000 queries at top-3 with 10 impressions each = more traffic than 1 query at top-1 with 5000 impressions.
